The Saab 2000 programme was launched in May 1989 as a stretched, swept-wing derivative of the Saab 340, designed to give airlines a 50-seat turboprop with genuinely jet-like cruise speeds. The first aircraft flew on 26 March 1992 in Linköping, Sweden.
Certified by EASA and the FAA, the Saab2000 entered commercial service in September 1994. Crossair, the Swiss regionalairline, became its launch customer and operated the largest Saab 2000 fleet,connecting secondary European airports with major hubs at speeds few turbopropscould match.
Only 63 aircraft were built before production ended in April 1999, as the rise of 50-seat regional jets reshaped the market. Despite the limited production run, the Saab 2000 built a reputation for reliability and performance, and other operators. Including Regional Airlines in France, Eastern Airways and Loganair in the United Kingdom, Pen Air in Alaska, and General Motors’ corporate shuttle. Added the type to their fleets. Special mission variants have also served with the Pakistan Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force.

You may want to choose another aircraft instead of the Saab 2000 if:
• You are travelling with fewer than 20 passengers on a short regional flight. A smaller turboprop or a business aircraft such as a King Air 350 usually provides a more cost-effective charter.
• You need to transport more than 50 passengers or require a wider cabin. Aircraft such as the ATR 72-600 or the Dash 8-400 (Q400) offer up to 70–78 seats.
• Your route exceeds around 2,800km or your schedule leaves no room for a fuel stop. A regional jet such as theEmbraer ERJ 145 offers comparable capacity with a longer effective range andhigher cruise speed, at a higher hourly rate.
