The Saab 340 was born from the first civil aircraft programme of Swedish manufacturer Saab AB, until then focused on military aviation. Developed from 1980 in partnership with US company Fairchild Aircraft, the aircraft made its first flight on 25 January 1983 in Linköping,Sweden.
The aircraft entered commercial service in June1984 with Swiss airline Crossair, its launch customer. The first revenue flightwith passengers, a week later, notably carried Pope John Paul II.
Produced between 1983 and 1999, with 459 unitsbuilt, the Saab 340 led to a stretched derivative, the Saab 2000. Although production ended in 1999, the aircraft remains widely operated today, valuedfor its reliability, moderate operating cost and ability to operate fromshort-runway airports, strengths that continue to make it a relevant option for group charter more than forty years after its first flight.
With 34 seats, the Saab 340 offers close to twice the capacity of a classic long-range business jet, at a significantly lower hourly cost , a trade-off that explains its continued presence in the regional charter market.
The Saab 340 is an efficient solution for amid-sized group on a regional route, but it is not always the right choice.Aircraft selection depends on passenger count, distance, budget and airport constraints.
You may want to choose a different aircraft instead of the Saab 340 if:
● Your group is fewer than 15passengers. A private jet or a smaller turboprop such as the Beechcraft 1900D will reduce the cost per passenger while keeping a direct flight.
● Your group exceeds 34 passengers. An ATR 42, an ATR 72 or a larger-capacity regional jet will be more suitable.
● Your route exceeds 1,700 km with no stop over. A Dornier 328, faster and with greater range, or a regional jet, willbe a better fit.
● Your mission timing is particularly tight. A faster aircraft such as the Dornier 328 (620 km/h) will reduce flight time on the same route.
