Saab 340 charter, a regionalairliner built for groups

The Saab 340 is a twin-turbopropregional airliner built by Swedish manufacturer SaabAB, designed to carry up to 34 passengers on regional routes. At Artheau Aviation, we charter it for groups that need to travel together : sports teams, delegations, incentive groups, film crews, on routes where adedicated airliner is more efficient than a commercial flight or severalprivate jets.

Its cabin size, ability tooperate from short runways and moderate operating cost make it a relevantoption for groups of 20 to 34 people looking for a direct flight at a fixedtime, without the constraints of a scheduled commercial service.

As with every aircraft in ourfleet, we only recommend the Saab 340 when it fits your mission. For a largergroup or a longer route, another airliner may be more suitable — we will tellyou directly.

*Indicative price per passenger based on a full 34-passenger charter. Regional airliners are chartered by aircraft rather than by individual seat.

The prices shown are estimates and do not constitute a firm offer. The final Saab 340 charter cost may vary depending on aircraft positioning, airport charges, operating fees, taxes, seasonality, crew logistics and last-minute availability.

The Saab 340 delivers the best cost per passenger when the group is close to its full 34-seat capacity. For a smaller group, Artheau Aviation may recommend a smaller aircraft to reduce the total charter cost without compromising the quality of service.

Why charter a Saab 340?

The Saab 340 answers a specificneed: moving a group of 20 to 34 people on a regional route, at a chosen time, without depending on connections or the schedule of a commercial flight. Werecommend it when the number of passengers makes a private jet inefficient, butthe route does not justify a larger airliner.

The Saab 340 is particularlysuited to sports teams travelling to a match, corporate groups meeting for aseminar or incentive trip, film crews heading to a production location, andinstitutional or political delegations travelling together on a regional route.

As an independent broker, werecommend the Saab 340 when your group is between 20 and 34 passengers and thedistance is under approximately 1,700 km. For a smaller group, a private jet ora smaller turboprop such as the Beechcraft 1900D will reduce the cost perpassenger. For a larger group or a longer route, an ATR 42 or a Dornier 328will often be more relevant.

Saab 340 features and charter highlights

●     Up to 34 seats in a single-class configuration

●     Range of 1,700 km (920 NM), sufficient for mostregional European routes

●     Cruise speed of 524 km/h (283 kt)

●     Strong short-runway performance, with access to manysecondary airports

●     Single-aisle cabin, three-abreast seating, fastboarding and deplaning for a group

●     Two General Electric CT7-9B turboprop engines, recognised for their reliability in regional operations

●     Dedicated external baggage hold, suited to groupluggage and sports or technical equipment

●     Cabin configuration adjustable to passenger count andmission type (full group or reduced VIP layout)

What types of flights andadvantages for your group?

The Saab 340 allows you to consolidate a team's travel onto a single flight, at a chosen time, rather thanbooking multiple seats on a scheduled commercial service. It also provides access to secondary airports closer to the final destination, reducing ground transport time for the whole group.

What missions is the Saab 340 best suited for?

The Saab 340 is suited to missions where a group of 20 to 34 people needs to travel together on a regional route:

●      Sports team travel: team, technicalstaff and equipment carried on a single flight to the competition venue.

●      Corporate seminars and business travel: bringing together colleagues from several cities, incentive trips, extended executive committees.

●      Filming and production travel: technical crew, equipment and talent transported to a filming location, including secondary airports close to the site.

●      Institutional and political delegations: official groups travelling together on a regional route, with a controlled schedule.

●      Group travel and tour operators:programmes to regional destinations poorly served by direct commercial flights.

●      Event logistics: transporting staff, artists or guests for a one-off event.

As an independent broker, Artheau Aviation recommends the Saab 340 when your group and route match this mission profile. If your group is smaller or your route longer, we will point you towards a moresuitable aircraft.

The story behind the Saab 340

The Saab 340 was born from the first civil aircraft programme of Swedish manufacturer Saab AB, until then focused on military aviation. Developed from 1980 in partnership with US company Fairchild Aircraft, the aircraft made its first flight on 25 January 1983 in Linköping,Sweden.

The aircraft entered commercial service in June1984 with Swiss airline Crossair, its launch customer. The first revenue flightwith passengers, a week later, notably carried Pope John Paul II.

Produced between 1983 and 1999, with 459 unitsbuilt, the Saab 340 led to a stretched derivative, the Saab 2000. Although production ended in 1999, the aircraft remains widely operated today, valuedfor its reliability, moderate operating cost and ability to operate fromshort-runway airports, strengths that continue to make it a relevant option for group charter more than forty years after its first flight.

With 34 seats, the Saab 340 offers close to twice the capacity of a classic long-range business jet, at a significantly lower hourly cost , a trade-off that explains its continued presence in the regional charter market.

When to choose a different aircraft than theSaab 340?

The Saab 340 is an efficient solution for amid-sized group on a regional route, but it is not always the right choice.Aircraft selection depends on passenger count, distance, budget and airport constraints.

You may want to choose a different aircraft instead of the Saab 340 if:

●      Your group is fewer than 15passengers. A private jet or a smaller turboprop such as the Beechcraft 1900D will reduce the cost per passenger while keeping a direct flight.

●      Your group exceeds 34 passengers. An ATR 42, an ATR 72 or a larger-capacity regional jet will be more suitable.

●      Your route exceeds 1,700 km with no stop over. A Dornier 328, faster and with greater range, or a regional jet, willbe a better fit.

●      Your mission timing is particularly tight. A faster aircraft such as the Dornier 328 (620 km/h) will reduce flight time on the same route.

This may not be the solution you expected, but it is the one we recommend. At Artheau Aviation, we compare several aircraft types before proposing an option, based on your group, your route and yourbudget, not on the aircraft that is easiest to sell.

Saab 340 vs other regional airliners

Compare the Saab 340 with other regional airliners based on passenger capacity, range, cruise speed, indicative charter rate and the type of mission each aircraft is best suited for.

Comparison of the Saab 340 with similar regional airliners
Aircraft Passengers Range Maximum speed Indicative price* Best suited for
Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia Up to 30 1,480 km / 800 NM 552 km/h From €3,100/hour Slightly smaller groups on comparable regional missions, at a similar hourly cost.
Dornier 328-110 Up to 32 1,850 km / 1,000 NM 620 km/h From €3,900/hour Missions with tight timing or routes beyond the Saab 340's comfortable range.
ATR 42-600 Up to 48 1,665 km / 900 NM 556 km/h From €4,350/hour Larger groups requiring more than 34 seats, at a higher hourly cost.
Beechcraft 1900D Up to 19 2,780 km / 1,500 NM 499 km/h From €2,400/hour Smaller groups or VIP missions requiring greater range for a smaller headcount.

*Indicative hourly charter rates only. Final prices vary depending on the selected aircraft, positioning, routing, airport charges, taxes, crew logistics, seasonality and availability.

The Saab 340 does not offer the largest capacity or the longest range in its category, but it provides one of the strongest balances between group size, regional airport access and operating cost. For a group over 34 passengers, an ATR 42 will be more relevant; for a longer route or tighter timing, the Dornier 328 will often be the better choice.

Saab 340 FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about Saab 340 charter prices, range, passenger capacity, airport access and the booking process with Artheau Aviation.

01

How much does it cost to charter a Saab 340?

The cost of chartering a Saab 340 depends on your itinerary, flight duration, aircraft availability, positioning flights and airport charges. As a general guide, prices start from around €3,350 per flight hour. Every charter is quoted individually to reflect the exact mission requirements.

02

How many passengers can a Saab 340 accommodate?

The Saab 340 typically accommodates up to 34 passengers in a single-class configuration, depending on the operator. Some layouts prioritise a lower seat count for additional space or a VIP configuration.

03

What is the range of the Saab 340?

With a maximum range of approximately 1,700 km (920 NM), the Saab 340 covers most regional European routes. Typical missions include Paris–Barcelona, Paris–Berlin and Paris–Vienna, subject to payload, weather and operational conditions.

04

Can the Saab 340 operate from a regional airport or short runway?

Yes. The Saab 340 offers strong short-runway performance, allowing it to access many secondary airports that are less suitable for larger airliners. This often reduces ground travel time to the group's final destination.

05

Is the Saab 340 suitable for transporting a sports team?

Yes. Its 34-seat capacity and dedicated external baggage hold make it a suitable option for transporting a team, its technical staff and equipment on a single flight, at a chosen time, to the competition venue.

06

What is the cruise speed of the Saab 340?

The Saab 340 cruises at approximately 524 km/h (283 kt), a competitive speed for a regional turboprop, generally faster than rail or road alternatives over the same distances.

07

Can I charter a Saab 340 for filming or a production shoot?

Yes. The Saab 340 is regularly chartered to transport technical crews, filming equipment and talent to production locations, including secondary airports close to the site.

08

How much baggage can a Saab 340 carry?

The Saab 340 has a dedicated external baggage hold suited to group luggage and technical or sports equipment. The exact capacity depends on the aircraft configuration and will be confirmed when you request a quote.

09

Saab 340 or ATR 42: which one should I choose for my group?

The Saab 340 suits groups of 20 to 34 passengers, while the ATR 42 offers up to 48 seats at a higher hourly cost. The best choice depends on your passenger count, route and budget. Artheau Aviation recommends the aircraft that best fits your mission rather than promoting one model systematically.

10

Can I charter a Saab 340 at short notice?

Yes, subject to aircraft availability and operational approvals. A Saab 340 can sometimes be arranged within a few hours. Booking 48 to 72 hours in advance generally provides a wider choice of aircraft and better positioning options.

11

Why book through Artheau Aviation instead of directly with an operator?

Artheau Aviation compares an international network of certified operators to identify the most suitable Saab 340 for your mission. We review availability, cabin configuration, positioning costs, airport charges and operational constraints, while remaining your single point of contact throughout the flight.

12

How do I request a Saab 340 charter quote?

Share your itinerary, preferred travel dates, passenger count and any special requirements with our team. You can also use our private jet price calculator for an indicative estimate before one of our charter brokers prepares a personalised quotation based on live aircraft availability.
