Embraer 170: Aircraft Charter and Group Flights

The Embraer 170, also known as the E170, is a regional jet with 72 seats in its standard layout and certification for up to 80 passengers. According to Embraer, it can fly 3,982 km with a full passenger load and cruise at up to Mach 0.82, approximately 870 km/h at altitude. It was the first aircraft in the E-Jets family, which also includes the E175, E190 and E195.

For group charter flights, the E170 meets a specific need: carrying 50 to 80 passengers on journeys lasting one to five hours across Europe, North Africa or the Middle East. It sits between 50-seat regional jets such as the ERJ 145 and single-aisle aircraft such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.

At Artheau Aviation, we charter this aircraft for group travel, including film crews, sports teams, seminars and corporate events. We source available aircraft, compare operators and coordinate your flight from departure through to your group's arrival.

How much does it cost to charter an Embraer 170?

The cost of hiring an E170 is based on the entire aircraft, regardless of how many seats are occupied. It depends on flight time, aircraft positioning, airport charges, ground handling and any time the aircraft remains on site. For outbound and return flights several days apart, we compare keeping the aircraft at the destination with repositioning it between flights.

For last-minute requests, aircraft availability depends on market conditions at the time of booking. For groups of 50 to 80 passengers, the E170 offers an intermediate option between a 50-seat regional jet and a 150-seat single-aisle aircraft.

Every charter proposal is quoted individually after consulting several operators. Before you confirm, we explain what is included and which factors could affect the price.

Why charter an Embraer 170?

The E170 combines jet speed and range with seating capacity suited to medium-sized groups.

Up to 80 passengers

A large group travels together on one aircraft without chartering a 150-seat single-aisle jet.

No middle seats

The 2 + 2 cabin gives every passenger either a window seat or direct aisle access.

Nearly 4,000 km of range

With a range of 3,982 km according to Embraer, it can fly non-stop from Paris to Lisbon, Athens or Marrakech.

High payload capacity

Embraer specifies a maximum payload of 9,743 kg, useful for groups travelling with equipment.

Its limitation: performance at short-runway or high-altitude airports must be assessed case by case. Embraer quotes a take-off distance of up to 1,644 m at maximum take-off weight. For groups of fewer than 50 people, an ERJ 145 or Saab 2000 is often more suitable.

What is the range of the Embraer 170?

According to Embraer, the E170 can fly up to 2,150 nautical miles, approximately 3,980 km, with the maximum number of passengers in a single-class layout. The manufacturer notes that this is an indicative figure based on standard atmospheric conditions and zero wind. For each charter flight, we ask the operator to confirm the route based on payload, baggage, winds and the diversion airport.

From Paris-Le Bourget, this range covers non-stop flights to Figari (approximately 980 km), Lisbon (approximately 1,460 km), Tunis (approximately 1,490 km), Helsinki (approximately 1,900 km), Athens (approximately 2,110 km), Marrakech (approximately 2,120 km) and Istanbul (approximately 2,220 km).

For groups of more than 80 passengers or longer routes, we generally recommend a single-aisle aircraft such as the Airbus A321 or Boeing 737.

How many passengers can an Embraer 170 carry?

An E170 seats 72 passengers in a standard single-class layout with 32-inch seat pitch. Embraer offers up to 78 seats with reduced pitch, while its type certificate permits a maximum of 80 passengers. A two-class layout accommodates 66 passengers. We confirm the exact configuration and cabin layout in every proposal.

The cabin has four seats per row, two on each side of the aisle. There are no middle seats, which is particularly welcome on flights lasting two to four hours.

How much space is available for baggage and equipment?

Embraer specifies a maximum payload of 9,743 kg, including passengers and baggage. For groups carrying equipment, such as film crews or sports teams, we check hold volume, oversized item dimensions and permitted weights with the operator before confirming the aircraft.

Our air charter broker's view of the Embraer 170

When we recommend it

For group flights of 50 to 80 passengers within Europe or the Mediterranean, when jet speed matters and a single-aisle aircraft would be oversized.

What we check

The actual seating layout (72 to 80 seats), baggage hold volume, oversized items and range with your group's payload.

Operational considerations

Airport slots, ground handling, catering, take-off performance at the selected airport and crew rest requirements.

Alternatives

Smaller: ERJ 145 or Saab 2000. Similar capacity on short routes: ATR 72 or Dash 8 Q400. Larger: Airbus A321 or Boeing 737.

Real charter mission: an Embraer 170 for a film crew, from Paris to Figari

A French film crew needed to travel to Corsica for a ten-day shoot. We arranged outbound and return E170 charter flights for its 75 members between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Figari, and assisted the technical crew and cast on arrival and departure.

  1. 1

A group too large for a scheduled flight

The crew initially planned to travel on a scheduled service. The number of travellers and the volume of sensitive equipment (cameras, audio systems and lighting) made this difficult to organise.

A charter flight allowed the entire team and its equipment to travel together, without depending on available seats or the baggage allowances of a scheduled airline.

  2. 2

    A last-minute decision

The production team chose to charter an aircraft at the last minute. We checked market availability and recommended the E170, which matched the group size, equipment requirements and requested schedule among the aircraft available.

At approximately 980 km from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Figari, the flight takes around one hour and thirty minutes by jet, well within the aircraft's range.

  3. 3

    Sensitive equipment and oversized baggage

We coordinated the carriage of cameras, audio systems, lighting and oversized baggage with the operator. Tailored onboard catering was also arranged.

With 75 passengers on board, the E170 was close to its maximum capacity. Confirming the volume and weight of equipment with the operator was therefore essential before committing to the aircraft.

  4. 4

    Assistance on arrival and departure

Our team was present on arrival in Corsica and again at departure ten days later to assist the film crew and cast. We also organised road transfers between Figari Airport and the filming locations, as well as the return flight to Paris.

The production team therefore had one point of contact for the flight, equipment and ground transfers.

This mission demonstrates the value of aircraft charter for audiovisual productions: keeping the crew and equipment together, responding to a last-minute request and entrusting the logistics to one air charter broker.
